Ask what English score you need and you will hear the same figure over and over: IELTS 6.5. It is the headline requirement at Memorial, Cape Breton, Brock, Nipissing and the University of Prince Edward Island, which accepts TOEFL 80 as its equivalent.
So applicants aim at 6.5, get 6.5, and assume the English question is settled. Often it is not.
The number underneath the number
An IELTS result is five numbers, not one. You get a band for Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, and an overall that averages them. An overall of 6.5 can be built in very different ways:
- 6.5 in all four
- 7.5 Listening, 7.5 Reading, 5.5 Writing, 5.5 Speaking
Both average to 6.5. Only one of them clears a requirement written as "6.5 overall with no band below 6.0", which is exactly how Brock states theirs.
The second candidate has the headline score and still misses. Writing and Speaking are usually where it happens, because they are marked by a person against a rubric rather than by an answer key.
Why institutions write it that way
A degree is not an average of skills. A student who reads well but cannot write an assignment is in trouble in week three, and every department knows it. The band floor exists to catch exactly the profile that the overall hides.
What to do about it
Record all four bands, not just the overall. When you fill in your eligibility check here, the form asks for Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking separately. That is not busywork. It is the only way to answer the question an institution is actually asking.
Look at your weakest band first. If you are retaking a test to lift an overall from 6.0 to 6.5, you are optimising the wrong number. Lifting a single 5.5 to 6.0 often matters more and is usually faster.
Check the wording, not the headline. Some institutions state an overall and nothing else. Some state an overall and a floor. Some state a higher requirement for one programme: Cape Breton asks 6.5 generally and 7.0 for Nursing.
A low band is rarely the end of it. Institutions routinely admit students below their stated floor into language support or a pathway programme first. It changes your route and your timeline, not your chances.
The short version
The overall gets you onto the page. The bands decide whether you stay on it. Know all five numbers before you decide whether to sit the test again.
